Global Game Jam Recap and Play Event

Location change notice: this meeting will be at UMN Rapson Hall Courtyard, the same location as GameCraft, the Global Game Jam site for IGDATC and Glitch.

Our jam site produced 28 games during the jam! Come see, talk about and play some the games we made in January during the Global Game Jam. We’ll talk about the jam and how things went. Some teams will get a few minutes to talk about their game and their jam expereince. What went wrong, what went right? Learned lessons and fun happenings. A great way to recap the Global Game Jam and see what eveyone spent their 48 hours on.

But most importantly, we’ve got the space this year to setup game stations so you can play the games. Including a few VR games and the game made by the Virtual Reality Design Lab (VRDL) using their Perception Head-Mounted Display and motion capture system in Rapson Hall.

The Church Street ramp is right across from Rapson Hall. There are parking meters on Pilsbury. There are cheaper lots (Maroon and Gold) surrounding the TCF Bank Stadium.
We’ll be heading to Buffalo Wild Wings (walk map) after the event for food, drinks and more game talk. Come socialize with other local developers.

IGDATC and Ham in the Fridge present: BUMP-N’-JAM

Ham in the Fridge — the team behind Bumpin’ Uglies (and a long history of Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and KidsWB titles) — extends a unique invitation to participate in a lively, hands-on jam-style brainstorming session for Bumpin’ Uglies.

Ever wanted to get your hands dirty coming up with brand new gameplay ideas for a franchise with the attention of the big leagues? Riff with peers and industry pros, and build off of top-notch artwork, animation and sound design?

Here’s your chance to help shape the future of games in the Bumpin’ Uglies universe, and even get an opportunity to join the team to bring them to life.  Expect to participate in an active brainstorming session, and to make full use of the wall-to-wall whiteboards!

Food and drinks will be provided.  Please get familiar with the brand by downloading and playing Bumpin’ Uglies for iOS.

Ludum Dare 24

Ludum Dare is a regular accelerated game development Event. Participants develop games from scratch in a weekend, based on a theme suggested by community. Ludum Dare #24 is this month, starting August 24th, 2012.

We’ve heard some interest from the community in the past, which has developed into at least one organized event.

Canopy has graciously offered to host a Ludum Dare 24 jam, starting 6pm Fri to 10pm Sun. The site will be open overnight. There are a variety of food choices within walking distance. Canopy is located at 615 First Avenue NE, Suite 425, Minneapolis, MN 55413. If interested in the group jam, please contact Joel Stewart for info and updates. joel@canopyco.com @ojstewart

The Ludum Dare Is In Progress

The Ludum Dare has begun and I have setup a chat line on IRC in case people want to hop on and discuss stuff. I unfortunately will not be entering this time as my weekend just got too full of stuff to do. If you want to chat just hop on an IRC client and connect to irc.synirc.net then join the channel #IGDATC.

The theme this time around is Tiny World. So run wild with it and let us know how things are going. Can’t wait to see the results. Also don’t forget there is a seperate Jam going on that gives you an extra day to work on the game. Good luck participants.

I Ludum Dare You!

The event is coming soon. We all ready ourselves with collections of snacks and caffeinated beverages. Ludum Dare 22 is nearing.

On April 20th, thru the 23rd, we invite everyone to participate in the Ludum Dare game design competition. While we don’t have a specific location I do plan on setting up an IRC chat channel for the weekend for us to chat in during the competition. The Ludum Dare is a single event, no teams, and you must start from scratch or use publicly available libraries.

IGDATC Feb 2012: Global Game Jam 2012 Recap and Play Party

The 2012 Global Game Jam ended up with 244 sites in 48 countries hosting almost 11,000 participants.  Nearly 2,300 games were created.  IGDATC did it’s part with 27 participants and 11 game projects.

Come and hear a recap of the GGJ event and experience, and brief post-mortems from the IGDATC GGJ teams.  Then, play and rate some of the 2300 games to help find the gems.

Bring laptops, smartphones, ipads (and a PS3 or 360 controller if you’ve used it with a laptop before.)  We’ll also have a selection of the board games ready to play in the cafeteria.

IGDA Twin Cities Global Game Jam 2012

Over the last weekend 25 local game developers converged on the Nerdery, taking hold of various tables and rooms for Global Game Jam 2012. The theme was a snake biting its tail, the Ouroboros. At then end of the 48 hour event, 10 games were released into the wild. Details about the local games are here!

The IGDA Twin Cities chapter would like to extra-huge-mega thank The Nerdery for providing the location for the entire 48 hour event, as well as provining internet, drinks, snacks, food and ample whiteboard space! Thanks to the staff, Tom, Greg and Joe for volunteering to spend their weekend and nights with us. The Nerdery, and its employees, are top notch in every aspect and we can’t say thank you enough.

Thanks to everyone who participated.

Lastly, thanks to Zach Wendt for coordinating the event details and Ty Burks for helping drum up interest at the January meeting.

Our Feb meeting is already next week on 2/8 (event emails coming soon)! IGDATC will be hosting a GGJ Play Party, where YOU will play and rate some of the 2300 games created by 11k participants at 244 sites world wide. We’ll also have quick post-mortems for the local projects. Details about the local games are here!

GGJ 2012 Last Call Almost Upon Us

We got the details worked out for the Global Game Jam event at The Nerdery. If you want in there is still time. Registration must be complete by Friday at 12:00PM (noon). Make sure you are signed up by then if you want to partake in the event. Sign-up is free and so is access to our sponsored location.

Another big update is that we will be driving this event through all 48 hours. The Nerdery will remain open the whole time so feel free to sleep there both nights (if you end up sleeping).

We finally got our site approved by the people over at GGJ. You can now find it here:

Make sure to create an account on the Global Game Jam site and set the IGDA Twin Cities to your location. It appears that the final word on The Nerdery being open overnight on Saturday is still up in the air so make sure to stay tuned for more updates.

We are also asking everyone to be sure to fill our your profile on the GGJ site so we know all of the skill sets and abilities we have coming in. If you can do multiple things make sure to list them all.

That’s all for now but I’m sure there will be more to come in the coming week as we lead into the GGJ.
